after installing a 2nd network card in my pc under windows, my home network setup is as follows:
- 1st card connects via cat5 cable to DSL-modem.
- 2nd card connects via coax cable in bus fashion to
2) mvax3500/vms v6.1 with decnet (the hobbyist vax kit (v1, 1997) came w/o tcp/ip), via coax to
3) another PC, via coax to
4) MR122T repeater, via CAT5 to
5) decstation3000/vms v8.3 with tcp/ip
from the PC I can establish a (tcp/ip) ftp connection to the alpha via host address 192.168.0.1, which works great!
Question: is it possible to allocate a network drive under windows to access the vms disks in the pathwork like fashion via something like
> net use F: \\192.168.0.1\resource /user:name password
it seems a resource qualifier for the server is required.
So I tried
> net use F: \\192.168.0.1\DKA0 /user:name password
which produces a time-out with the error "network path not found."
what could be used as resource name? and how must it be configured on the alpha?
RE: pc to openvms networking via network device allocation?
concerning NFS, if it is already available on vms, would "Windows Services for UNIX Version 3.5"
be a suitable NFS client?
it seems to be free, but it's 217MB download and I wanted something much simpler.
also found "nfsAxe NFS Client" which is much smaller and relatively cheap.
malmberg December 12 2017 HPE only makes the most current version of OpenVMS Alpha / IA64 /VAX available to hobbyists. When I had access to the Alliance 1 program it was the same. No public downloads are allowed by HPE.

malmberg September 10 2017 https://sourceforge.net/p /vms-ports/wiki/VMSInstal lation/ For the most part just use VMS 6.1 media instead of 7.3. But why run the older release?
DoeveR August 07 2017 Where can I find the write up on running VMS 6.1 using the simh emulator?
