Hello,

I have a alpha/openvms 7.1 running under freeaxp and I want to change the address ip of this alpha.
For doing this as system user, I'm entering sys$manager:ucx$config and change the IP address of we0 interface. This work well after stopping and restarting TCP service (options 5&6 of ucx$config).

My problem is that, if I restart the virtualized machine after having stopped via shutdown command, the IP address is always back to the old value!

Somebody have any clue of what I'm doing wrong so that my change became permanent??

Regards

The TCPIP/IP (UCX) commands have a special option, as I recalled, named "CONFIGURATION" that needed to be added to SET, as in SET CONFIGURATION in order for the configuration to be consistent.

The UCX$CONFIG procedure should be setting the permanent data base, so I do not know why the freeaxp instance is not saving the setting.

SHOW CONFIGURATION should show the database.

One thought though is that the UCX$* or TCPIP$* files should only be in SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]. If you have copies in SYS$SPECIFIC:[SYSEXE] also, it could cause some strangeness.

Also the default location of these files can be changed with logical names, so if the those are set differently when you run the UCX$CONFIG, then you could be changing the wrong files.

Alpha/openvms 7.1 is ancient. OpenVMS 8.4 is current.

Are you also running DECnet?

Malmberg: ucx* files are only located in SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]
Bruce: Yes DECnet is used on this machine.
I do have try on ucx after removing the host for ip address I want change and then
SET configuration interface we0 /host=ip /network=mask /broadcast=subnet
and then set host "NODE" /address=ip /ALIAS=("node1","node2"smiley

after reboot back to the old config!

I do have try also to change the interface setting directly on ucx using set interface WE0 /host=ip /network=mask /broadcast=subnet

it's the same, wheter I do or not set exec state off under ncp before.

Any time after reboot it come up with the old setting.

I do have search in com files if there is some interface redefinition, not found yet... but with sh log ucx$configuration I found "UCX$CONFIGURATION" = "SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]UCX$CONFIGURATION.DAT;1134" (LNM$SYSTEM_TABLE) and the file ucx$configuration.dat;1134
I do not found where this logical is defined. After changing configuration it refere to new version number but date it's older !! and inside still refering to old ip address

Review section 15.3 in the User Guide: http://www.migrationspecialties.com/pdf/VirtualAlpha_UserGuide.pdf

Make sure the DECnet and UCX start commands are inline in the SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM and that DECnet starts first.

Run UCX$CONFIG.COM, stop TCP/IP services, run all [A] of the configuration steps, exit UCX$CONFIG, and immediately reboot.

Do you get any TCPIP warnings or errors during boot?

You have several non-existent interfaces. Remove them.

You have several errors in the boot. Clean them up. Once you have a clean, error free boot, particularly within UCX, then try re-configuring the IP.

While most of the errors in the boot may or may not affect the original problem, some look very suspicious, such as the failure to create a logical name table early on.

DECNET V must be started before TCP/IP if it is using Phase 1V compatibility mode.

The TCP/IP Startup is showing up twice in the printout.

This looks like multiple significant configuration issues.

I would not be surprised if there are files in SYS$SPECIFIC: that should be in SYS$COMMON: or multiple copies of the TCPIP database files are in unexpected places.

I would recommend fixing all the errors in the startup, and then commenting out everything except what is needed for the TCP/IP startup for troubleshooting this issue.

I also suspect that the system disk needs to be carefully examined to make sure that the SYSUAF, NET$*, Rightslist, sys$specific:, TCP$*.DAT, UCX$*.DAT are all correct.

It may be simpler to start with a fresh installed system disk and then add the applications, than to figure out why this is not working.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.
