I'm getting CRC errors when attempting to UNZIP the BASIC016.ZIP file in the [KITS] directory on the OpenVMS Hobbyist CD. This may or may not also happen on a real Alpha, I don't know, but unfortunately I don't have a real Alpha anymore. Can someone please see if 1) you can even duplicate this or not and 2) if so, does it also happen on a real Alpha or not?

Either way it's not a serious problem for me though as I just worked around it by unzipping the thing on Windows, FTPing the savesets over to the emulator and then doing a "set file/attr" command to get back the proper saveset record attributes.

Note that I have NOT run into any other CRC errors with any other savesets or in any other context.

I don't have the Alpha hobbyist disc to test this but I have noticed some oddities in the past with certain zip files when using an older version of InfoZIP - CRC errors, hangs, crashes. You can get the version number and date from InfoZIP by running it without any parameters. I have had problems with InfoZIP even as new as 2006. You could try building the latest version from source - that has solved my problem a few times in the past.

I was using UNZIP 5.52, the one from the Hobbyist CD itself. UNZIP 5.50 from some HP website also did the same thing.

I've now built UNZIP 6.0 from source per your excellent suggestion and alas it has exactly the same problems.

The problems are probably with the ZIP archive itself, but I'd love to know if this also happens on a real Alpha. My bet is that it does.

Try to get to the bottom of this, especially when using a Beta version of a new emulator. You could try to download PersonalAlpha and boot it from your existing disk container file. Then repeat the same UNZIP operation.

If noone else has this CD and the same problem, can you make that .ZIP file available ?

I am using PersonalAlpha and have the OpenVMS 8.3 Hobbyist CD

I have also unzipped and installed the included BASIC016.ZIP without any problems.

It should be noted that I am using the following Info-Zip version

UnZip 6.00 of 20 April 2009, by Info-ZIP.

Did you UNZIP from the CD directly ? Is DKA0: your CD ?
Does UNZIP -l also produce these errors ?
Can you copy with .ZIP file to your 'virtual' disk with BACK/VERIFY, then try UNZIP or UNZIP -l on the copied file ?

Just trying to narrow down, where those errors may be coming from. The fact that you could unzip the file on Windows, seems to at least indicate, that the file contents on the CD should be o.k.

I get the same results if I use a disk image created on the MacBook Pro host or the real CD-ROM in the MacBook drive. I also get the same results with the unzip 5.52 version on the CD-ROM.

Looks like there is something different in the reads done by the COPY command and the reads done by unzip.

Using backup to copy the files off the CD-ROM also works.

I forgot to add that I am seeing these errors on every ZIP file on the CD-ROM that I have copied to the "local" hard drive so far.

John,

thanks for running these tests. So it looks like COPYing those .ZIP files from the CD to a FreeAXP virtual disk seems to CORRUPT the .ZIP file !

As BACKUP works, could you use the following technique to find out, which blocks are being corrupted and what the corruption pattterns look like ?

$ COPY the .ZIP file from CD to the virtual disk
$ BACKUP the .ZIP file from CD to the virtual disk
$ BACKUP/COMPARE file-copied-with-COPY file-copied-with-BACKUP

This should report the VBNs of any blocks, which are different. Then use DUMP and compare those blocks in those 2 files. This should show the differences...

John,

thanks for re-testing. From my point of view, the results do not yet absolve FreeAXP ! Do the VBN numbers reported by BACKUP/COMPARE show some recognisable pattern (like every n blocks) ? Could you try DUMP/BLOCK... from one of those 'corrupted' blocks from the good and bad file, so we might be able to see the corruption pattern ?

Bruce,

note that John was even testing with a different .ZIP file (i.e. ALPHA_FOR0801.ZIP instead of BASIC016.ZIP as used by Astrodanco) and certainly a different CD ! And he did see the same kind of behaviour.

Astrodanco,

did you try to copy the .ZIP file with BACKUP from the CD to the FreeAXP disk and unzip from there ?

Volker.

John,

if you happen to be running PersonalAlpha as well, could you try this test with PersonalAlpha ?

John and I are testing with the same zip file from the same CD. I've ordered an 8.3 Hobbyist CD to do a second check.

I installed the latest ECOs to the Alpha VMS 8.3 and made a new copy of the zip file. The new copy was corrupt.

So for the next test, FTP the same .ISO file from the Mac OS-X host that was mounted by the Virtual Box Windows XP VM to the VMS host.

I then mounted it as a logical disk and copied the zip file.
That copy tested fine with unzip.

So it appears that there is nothing wrong with the CD-ROM media or the MacBook Pro DVD drive.

Interestingly I was only able to get about 200KiB/s FTP transfer rate between the Mac OS-X host and the AlphaVMS emulated machine.

John,

please dump and compare the 'good' and 'bad' blocks. This may tell us something about the type of corruption.

The behavior of the corruption has changed with build 283.

Before random data was wrong in the copied file.

Now for the file appdev010.zip, blocks 118, 119, 242, 243 are all zeros.

For for the file alpha_for0801.zip, the copied file has block 243 as all zeros.

I copied up the diff to Eisner and sent you an e-mail.

I was also able to get 7.5 Mb/sec on the upload.

John,

thanks for providing the .DIFF file, but I could actually 'visualize' a block of zeros myself ;-) So the important information are the corrupted VBN numbers !

118, 119, 242, 243 - note that those VBNs are 124. blocks apart ! COPY (in V8.3, actually since V8.2 - thanks to Guy !) is using a DEFAULT COPY BLOCK SIZE of 124 !

Re-try the COPY with /BLOCK_SIZE=63 - do the 'corruptions' still happen ?

You should start using IO$SDA tracing the COPY operation. I assume, that 124. block IOs to the files on CD is somehome overwhelming some of the drivers (FreeAXP, Windows, CD ?) in the IO stack. Backup will most likely be limited to 63. block IOs (you could also easily find this with IO tracing).

$ ANAL/SYS
SDA> IO LOAD
SDA> IO START TRACE/NOBIO/DIO
SDA> SPAWN COPY from-cd to-disk
SDA> IO STOP TRACE
SDA> IO SHOW TRACE/DIO
SDA> IO UNLOAD
SDA> EXIT

A WORD OF WARNING for FreeAXP users !!!

Be careful when COPYing files from CD especially with OpenVMS Alpha V8.2 or higher using the COPY command ! File data may be getting corrupted.

You'll only easily see this with .ZIP files when you try to UNZIP them. Seeing corruption in other types of files may be more difficult.

As a workaround, use BACKUP to copy the files.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
