I just added a lot of memory to my Alpha so I figured I might actually be able to do some stuff with it like run a web browser. I installed the CSWB kit that was on the Alpha hobbyist disc. It identifies itself as:

Secure Web Browser V1.7-13 is based on Mozilla 1.7.13

Unfortunately, if I run it from a DECterm while logged on at the console, it crashes DECwindows. The final entries in the DECW$SERVER_0_ERROR.LOG:

11-AUG-2010 20:35:05.4 vmsScreenClose: Closing screen down
11-AUG-2010 20:35:05.5 FreeFontPath: FPE "DECW$SYSCOMMON:[SYSFONT.DECW.100DPI]"
refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
11-AUG-2010 20:35:05.9 vmsScreenClose: Closing screen down
11-AUG-2010 20:35:06.3 AddResource(8000c1, c0000002, d2129a8), client=2
11-AUG-2010 20:35:06.4
11-AUG-2010 20:35:06.4 Fatal server error:
11-AUG-2010 20:35:06.4

I tried increasing my process quotas in SYSUAF and also tried boosting the servers quotas in DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM but it still crashes the same way.

Anyone have any ideas what I might try to be able to use this at the console? It works fine if I set the display to my linux machine (I'm posting this right now using cswb displayed on linux) so it's apparently some kind of issue with the DECwindows display server.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
