I may be inheriting an Alpha from work shortly and have a few questions.

I saw previously (a few years ago) that HP was offering Tru64 UNIX for a discounted price for non-commercial use for $99.00. Is this program still available?

I'm interested also in purchasing a second Alpha and running both Tru64 and OpenVMS.

Any thoughts?

BTW, the system at work is a DEC Personal Workstation (can't remember the exact model).

you can run both. They use the same SRM firmware.
They use different boot flags
usuall -flags a,0 for unix and usually -flags 0,0 for vms

My main question was regarding the Tru64 Non-Commercial license program. Is this licensing program still available?

[quote:f3a557fc43="Stephen Hoffman"]Wander over there, select non-commercial unix from the list, and ask nicely? (And let us know?)[/quote:f3a557fc43]
Apparently for one person from Nekochan forum it did work. It didn't work for me though... but that's completely other story, and it's not HP bashing forum (but you do know from my post from C.S.D smiley )

Update to my previous post: I have contacted HP about Tru64 and got a very positive answer:
[quote:a6477aa97e]Unfortunately, we discontinued the non-commercial media kit. Therefore,
I cannot provide you with a V4.0 non-commercial kit. However, I may be
able to have a V5.1B-4 media kit sent to you along with a non-commercial
license. Send me your mailing address and I will see what I can do.

I paid nothing (except 22% of declared value as import tax), used Tru64 feedback form to ask, then Product Planner got back to me and that was it.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
