I 'am using Alpha station 255 with openVMS 7.1 , on a process plant config./history server . For backup purpose i tried to use a seagate 73 GB harddisk and used standard backup commands . Although the process is succesfully completed each time , the backup does not boot beyond startup message.
Somebody suggested to use INITIALIZE/INDEX=BEGIN and NOINITIALIZE qualifier on target disk but it did not help either . However when i tried a older , from scrapyard , 9 GB harddisk, every thing went fine . This disk worked perfect for many days before i removed it for relibility reasons. Since i cannot upgrade my operating system due to lack of support from vendor , niether can i risk installing any patch , please advise how to use a larger / new hard disk to make a succesful copy .
Note that i have tried all possible combinations of qualifiers and tried tape backups . But they all failed .

73 GB SCSI disks did not exist in 1996, and SCSI itself didn't include fields for disks larger than 8.58 GB back around that time-frame.

I think you may be incorrect. The 8.58GB limitation was an IDE limitation, not SCSI.

I have an Adaptec 2940 and it supports 32bit sector counts, which is a 2 Terabyte disk size limit When was the 2940 first released - probably around 1996???

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
