Just keep in mind that rlogin can be insecure, and telnet packets can be sniffed (less likely on a switch, but possible). I'm using ssh and scp to "telnet" into my cluster and copy files back and forth.

Hi folks,

Yesterday I got my first VAXserver 3900 emulated with SIMH on my DELL Inspiron 3800 laptop.

I got everything working fairly quickly including some TCP/IP functions.
As for integrating my node within my LAN, that's a task that's driving me nut.

I can do routing and ping on the LANs as well as over the Internet as long as I use IP addresses, not FQDN.

What does not work is resolving names and using FTP and TELNET (neither way).

I've attached results of various queries performed via the TCP/IP_Services to show my configuration.
[NOTE - The domain GRASSE.BIZ is a ficticious one, just to satisfy VMS needs.]

The only hint of something wrong with the config seems to show up issuing the SHOW HOST command.
Looking on GOOGLE with the error msg brings up pages related to VMS 8.2 that seem to suggest that the NS record is not OK.
Unfortunately I can not figure out how to adapt to 7.3 the fix they suggest for 8.2.

Sniffing with ethereal on my name server and listening for DNS
requests, I can't see any packet coming from the VAX.
On the other side when I listen for ICMP requests, I can see packets
coming from the VAX, whether pinging with local or Internet IP addresses.
[There are no issues with my LAN's firewall setup.]

Furthermore, FTP and TELNET seem to have their own issues, not related to the name server's one.
Here as well ethereal doesn't show packets coming from the VAX.

Can you spot anything wrong with my config or suggest further actions to debug the issue?

Thanks for your help.

Costantino

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
