Author CLUSTER with very different VMS versions

Hi!

I have a VAX4000/100A which is controlling an electron beam lithography system from 1988, still running well. To prepare data for it I have a small cluster with one DS10 and one PWS433au running VMS 8.3.

Now I would like to add the VAX to this cluster, but the VAX keeps crashing at boot start (mscp sharing show s up, then a MEMORY DUMP). At the cluster it shows up as NEW, but in never becomes a MEMBER.

I do NOT have a direct network cable between the existing cluster and the VAX, there are some switches in between. Could this be the reason?

Or is it at all possible to mix so different VMS version in the same cluster?

Or can anyone suggest a fix or a reason why I should give it up?

The main reason I need to do this is that I have difficulties finding a backup client daemon for VMS 5.5-2H, so I wanted to solve it by sharing the disks with a more modern VMS version and put the backup daemon there. But I have other reasons as well.

The drivers and software for the e-beam hardware attached to the VAX is more or less locked to VMS 5.5-2H, so I cannot install a more recent VMS version to it, which of course would be the obvious thing to do. But then the backup daemons would not have been an issue either...

Any help is appreciated.

Those versions are two far apart to cluster - it is not going to work.

There is a Veritas NetBACKUP client for that version.
You can use a locally attached tape or disk.

Ok, thanks.
What is the earliest VMS version that can cluster with VMS 8.3?

An idea: Would it be possible to arrange a DSSI cluster with an Alpha and share disks this way?

We want a little more freedom to choose our backup solution, we have more systems to take care of that runs similar applications.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
