I'd like to get OpenVMS running on an old Multia. I'm all set for licenses but have not been able to source the software itself. Does anyone know how I can get hold of OpenVMS 7.2 for the Alpha? Apparently this is the latest version which supports the Multia (albeit unofficially).

I think I can help you, since when my DEC PWS 600au Alpha workstation was purchased new from DEC in 1997, the original OS was (if I recall correctly) 7.2-1H1. Many years later I upgraded to the hobbyist 7.3 Alpha kit, and just recently to the hobbyist 8.3 Alpha kit. Send me a private message with your e-mail address and/or mailing address.

Also, since I'm not 100% certain of my facts as I write this, others shouldn't let this reply prevent them from offering help also.

Cheers,

-- Jim

I have a PWS 600au and i'm using the newest Alpha hobbyist kit 4.0 and it is working great. So if your Multia is in fact a PWS 600au, then order the new kit and get it installed. Good luck.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for replying to my message on the forum. It would be great if you could help me out with a kit. Apparently the custom installer for the Multia is very version-specific and requires 7.1-2 or 7.2. Hopefully what you have is close enough for it to work or be "gently persuaded" to do so.

Hi Steve --

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but it took me longer than expected to locate the OpenVMS Alpha Operating System installation CD (the Alpha CDs in the storage location I remembered turned out to be just the Software Product Library -- i.e., the layered products -- that came with my 600au system).

Contrary to what I dimly recalled in my original post, the purchase date was in fact Sept. 1998, and the OpenVMS version is V7.1-1H2 (the OpenVMS installation CD-ROM is dated March 1998). Let me know if this will work for you. Sorry what I've got isn't 7.2-xxx.

Good luck,

-- Jim

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
