I'm an old guy attempting to capture experience with older systems to just build up personal historical knowledge for systems I have little experience in, namely the PDP11 and the VMS on the VAX platform.
I'm pretty excited to get moving and learn some things. I do have previous experience with lisp machines, tandem, pyramid, several unix variants and so on...but it never hurts to delve into areas less known.
As soon as the local site updates with my DECUserve account number (signed up this morning, but the site here isn't recognising it yet), I plan on hitting the ground running.
Any early pointers on the PAKs and getting licensing set up that I should know about as a hobbyist? My intent is to do perhaps some virtualization using simh and vmware if possible, connecting it to other legacy systems (primos, unix, older router gear), and having it interact with my implementation of gns3, just for the heck of it.
malmberg December 12 2017 HPE only makes the most current version of OpenVMS Alpha / IA64 /VAX available to hobbyists. When I had access to the Alliance 1 program it was the same. No public downloads are allowed by HPE.

malmberg September 10 2017 https://sourceforge.net/p /vms-ports/wiki/VMSInstal lation/ For the most part just use VMS 6.1 media instead of 7.3. But why run the older release?
DoeveR August 07 2017 Where can I find the write up on running VMS 6.1 using the simh emulator?
