I am new to OpenVMS. I recently installed SIMH on my red hat linux machine. Using the VAX emulator, I then installed OpenVMS 7.3. VMS installed successfully and works well under SIMH (VAX). Now I need to do some file work in OpenVMS via EDT and TPU. I open a standard terminal and logon to VMS. Then I start editing a file using EDT. The problem I have is the terminal emulator does not emulate a VT100 so it is difficult to do anything other then simple editing of files.

I need to know of a good VT100 terminal emulator for linux and then I need to know how to setup up VMS so that I can log into the VMS system using this terminal emulator.

With the right resource file, xterm can provide excellent VT emulation. I'll post a pointer to my resource file when I get home from work.

If you are connecting from Windows, try putty or teraterm.

Eric Ahlefeldt's "vmsterm" script works really well as a VT100 with OpenVMS on either VAX or Alpha systems.

Information and download here:

I totally forgot about this thread... Here's the link to my xterm resource file for connecting to VMS systems.

http://nbpfaus.net/~pfau/DECterm

Save this on your system, then:

xrdb -merge DECterm
xterm -class DECterm -e "telnet vaxhost"

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
