Hey Bruce,

I've just successfully installed OpenVMS Alpha v8.3 on a 36GB disk, but it then started to demonstrate quite strange behaviour:

$ prod install DWMOTIF_ECO02

%PCSI-E-PDBVERFAIL, product database verification check failed

The product database failed an internal self-check. This operation will
be terminated without making any modifications to your system. The first
error encountered is shown below. Use the PRODUCT ANALYZE PDB command to
check for additional errors and to obtain instructions on how to proceed.

%PCSI-E-PDBFILERR, file PCSI$FILE_SYSTEM.PCSI$DATABASE;1 failed with the following error:
-RMS-E-ACC, ACP file access failed
%PCSI-E-S_OPFAIL, operation failed
%PCSIUI-E-ABORT, operation terminated due to an unrecoverable error condition

So it appears the disk became corrupt soon after the installation. You are still using FreeAXP 412 x86 (32-bit)? If so, please try 377 to see if the behavior persists. http://www.migrationspecialties.com/Downloads/freeaxpsetup_377.exe.

We have had one other client report a corruption issue when doing large FTPs on a 32-bit system. They upgraded to a 64-bit system and the problem went away. Not a great answer, but the best I have at the moment.

Thanks Bruce. The network traffic is a possibility - I've been looking at it today and building a system/configuring DECnet/transferring patch kits and it's usually during the transfer of patches that the disk becomes corrupt.

That said, I've also had the license database become corrupt more than once before the first boot!

It looks like I have a valid crash dump for it from forcing a system crash (CTRL-P, crash at the chevrons) as I've set the last installation up with dump off system disk. It may be of limited use, as it can't get back to the system disk to gather unwind data, but it's here.

Hi Bruce,

I tried the 377 release - same symptoms.

Best wishes
Steve

Thanks. We are trying to come up with a way to reproduce your issue. We have an old Acer laptop running Windows XP 32-bit on an Intel T2080 processor, 1.7GHz, 2GM memory. We use it as a FreeAXP test bed. How close is this to your hardware?

Hi All,

Sorry to post over here , but I would like to know if this can be a similar problem.
I unzip a file (master.zip) which has 1.07 GB and after that the Openvms is showing problems (you can see below)

Could this problem be associated with the same as described on this thread ?

Yes, I believe this is the same problem. This is the third report of this problem under FreeAXP-32. One user was able to resolve the issue by moving to FreeAXP-64.

We are testing FreeAXP-32 in-house with heavy I/O processes and large file copies in hopes of reproducing the problem. I will keep you posted.

I am testing against a 32-bit FreeAXP configuration running on an Acer laptop configured with an Intel T2080 processor and 2GB of RAM. I am trying to trigger the corruption problem using file activity against one of the virtual disks. I set up a COPY/FTP from another VMS node to this system and let it run 998 times without error. I am now adding a proper set of FTP calls to the test procedure to see if that will trigger the problem. The basic test sequence is:

1) Copy over some large files.
2) Verify they are present and the disk is still accessible.
3) Purge the files and start over.

P.S. - I backed up the system disk before starting. smiley

I have managed to recreate the disk corruption problem using the above scenario. We are now working on isolating the problem's source.

Good that you were able to reproduce the problem smiley

Hey Bruce,

Great news! Fingers crossed it's not too difficult to trace the source.

We are having a devil of a time consistently recreating the problem for analysis. The effort continues.

Did any of you have the Charon idle loop enabled when you encountered the problem?

This problem appears to affect disk images of 4GB and larger. This would imply a problem converting 64-bit pointers under 32-bit Windows. We are pursuing this line of reasoning in trying to debug the problem.

For those experiencing this problem, I recommend testing with disk images smaller than 4GB.

We have posted a fix for FreeAXP-32. You can download FreeAXP 2.1.2.422 at this link: http://www.migrationspecialties.com/FreeAXP.html#Kits

As we recently hypothesized, the problem was a 32/64 bit issue. Calculation of the offset into a disk to write data is done using a 64-bit variable. Under 32-bit Windows, only the low 32-bits of the result was being saved. This error would impact disks larger than 2GB. The problem only exists under 32-bit Windows. 64-bit systems are unaffected.

If you are using FreeAXP on a 32-bit host system, we recommend updating to FreeAXP 422 immediately. Be advised this is an interim release. We have been testing it for a week without encountering any problems. It has not been through our full Q/A suite.

If you are using FreeAXP on a 64-bit host system, there is no need to apply this update.

For our part, we will be adding some larger disks to our 32-bit test beds to ensure this problem does not re-occur. We extend our thanks to everyone in the forum that contributed to tracking this problem down.

Hi Bruce,

I've installed the 32 bit and it worked. I didn't have the problem as I had before. But after I had a problem in the boot (but I believe the cause is not the same). But I've installed the 64 bit version in another windows (64bit) and all steps were ok.
I don't know if I need to open a new thread but there is a problem installing oracle RDB into FreeAxp ?
