My home Alpha XP1000 runs OpenVMS 7.3-1 and has Powerstorm 300 graphics.
I cannot make DECwindows to work in any graphical mode other than 8-plane PseudoColor while xdpyinfo shows 10 visual types including 24-plane TrueColor and DirectColor. So I cannot reproduce graphical results I had on another Alpha with PBXGB-AC card (or 4D20).
I examined error log of x-server startup and discovered that visual parameters were set by Peregrine-made program (peregrine server DDX for OpenVMS). First this program accepts user-defined 24 planes and attempts to set 1600x1200 resolution (that in fact is impossible for Powerstorm 300). After expected failure it falls down to 1280x1024 8-plane mode. It ignores the possibility of 1280x1024 24-plane modes.
I tried to remove 1600x1200 option from the list of resolutions in the specific devise setup file (decw$*_GB.com) but it had no effect.
