I'm try to rehabilitate a 1200. Powers on, gives me PO>>> OK, but when tried to boot I got a BIOS checksum error.

Looking at updating the BIOS/SRM but it's a pre V5.3 system, so I need to update to 5.3 first, since there was a reorganisation of where the images were stored with that version.

I can find files to update to V 6.0 but the only file I can find for 5.3 is as1200_v5_3.exe or as1200_v5_3.sys, both too big to fit onto a floppy, and I cannot find any instructions on how to use them anyway. The system does not detect the CD drive -- well, AlphaBIOS detects the CD but SRM does not.

Any advice would be welcome. It would be nice to unbrick the old thing.

Darren

AlphaServer 1200, just to see if I can.

This looks to be of use:
http://whp-aus2.cold.extweb.hp.com/pub/alphaserver/firmware/retired_platforms/servers/AS1200/alpha1200_v60_fw_relnote.pdf
I went through a similar exercise about 10 years ago with my alphaserver 4000 (found it slightly 'nerve racking' - but worked ok) and had to update the SRM firmware in 2 stages, using floppies but have been told that it can be done using a CD and is more straightforward - the pdf has a section about it.

This site also has some useful links (and funny cartoons):
http://www3.sympatico.ca/n.rieck/links/openvms_resources.html

The Sympatico site firmware link looks to have come up 'trumps' smiley :

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
