I have OpenVMS 7.3 running on a SIMH VAX and have been trying to get to grips with its differences from a typical UNIX-like system. Among the most head-scratching has been the difference between devices/directories and the flat filesystem view that I'm used to in Linux, though I have an Amiga 1200 and am used to different devices.
I've compiled a simple 'hello world' app with the Compaq C compiler:
malmberg December 12 2017 HPE only makes the most current version of OpenVMS Alpha / IA64 /VAX available to hobbyists. When I had access to the Alliance 1 program it was the same. No public downloads are allowed by HPE.
