You can get a VMS CD from this site and use SIMH (free hardware emulator) to run VMS. There are systems around one which you can get a free login to try out. See 'Free VMS Accounts' links on www.openvms.org (right hand site of home page, scroll down a bit) |

In full typing: "logout". But most VMS users type "lo" - unique enough, there is only one command that begins with these two letters: LOgout.
If you have programs running, you will have to stop them first - unless you pushed them onto a batch or started them to be free-running ('detached" - not attached to a terminal).
If you're use to *x, be propared for some surprises. VMS is not like *x.

"Exit" has a meaning in comandprocedures (in *x (Linux/unix) parlance: scripts): it exits the procedure and returns to the caller: the other procedure, or the process that started the procedure. batch procedures will next end (logout).
*X is short for 'Linux/Unix". means nothing special. There are significant differences between VMS and unix/linux. that's all I wanted to mention. |

Don't want to burst your bubble too much, but you can't use the Alpha 8.3 with SIMH. SIMH emulates a VAX hardware, which is quite different from the Alpha hardware. Kind of like having a PPC linux distribution and you only have a Wintel box |

If you use SIMH (compiles well under *ix), you'd need a VMS VAX CD (any version, the later the better) - you could order one from this site.
VMS Alpha can be run on a hardware Alpha - small ones go cheap on Ebay these days. There is a free version of a commercial Alpha emulator which unfortunately only runs under WinXP. No idea whether it runs under Wine. There also is a SourceForge ES40 emulator project, but it's in its early stages still.

Great!

Although it's a bit dated, the installation instructions on Phil Wherry's site are still a valuable resource.
One thing: dd-ing the installation CD into a container file isn't necessary; under Linux, SIMH can access /dev/cdrom directly.
Good luck!

Yes they are the 1st instructions i found!
the dd isnt bad if your planning on installing a few times then you have the image on your machine.
I set up the emulator last night on the debain box
Acoupke hicups on the make but its waiting for the media now
Ive got alpha but not vax media so ill have to get a kit i suppose.
