Is there any free/hobbyist Alpha emulator out there that runs under Linux either 32 or 64 bit? The other thing is that it should allow a decent amount of memory. The typical 128MB doesn't cut it when playing with databases and other modern software.

There is one that is described as a work in progress. A search engine should easily come up with a link to it. It is my understanding that it can at least boot VMS.
I also saw a report of a commercial product that was in Beta, but I have not been tracking that. |

Hi!
Interesting to look at AlphaVM-free (http://emuvm.com/). It's up to 512Mb RAM to emulate (http://emuvm.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12&Itemid=8). |

I've been playing around with FreeAXP and I have a small Alpha VM running in that. If you haven't already checked that out it may do what you need. |

Hi, guys!
I found new AlphaVM-free 1.1.4 version for Linux on http://emuvm.com/ today.
Let's try it.

AlphaVM-free was discontinued a long time ago.
The only free Alpha emulator that seems to still exists is FreeAXP.
I could not get ES-40 to run on my Ubuntu system. It boots but crashes as soon as I try to install anything.
I see that QEMU claims alpha support. I do not know if anyone has been able to get VMS to boot on it.

Hi everyone!
QEMU supports Alpha, but it uses a limited PALcode that AFAIK can run Linux only (and doesn't boot from firmware, but directly loads the kernel), so it's not possible to run OpenVMS on it.
ES-40 is actually not that bad, it only contains a few annoying bugs and another bunch of unfinished stuff. I've been working on a fork I named AXPbox (https://github.com/lenticularis39/axpbox) and as of now OpenVMS can be installed on it (https://github.com/lenticularis39/axpbox/wiki/OpenVMS-installation-guide), so you can try it. It still has a lot of problems, for example Ethernet is not working, so there's still a lot of work needed.
