Hi, I bought a VAX machine which has had it's hard-drive totally rubbed for security reasons. I'd like to put OpenVMS on this machine but have never done an install before. Could someone firstly give me clear instructions please how to format the hard-disk, and any labels I should add, and anything else. I've got an OpenVMS 7.3 CD. The machine is a VAXStation 4000 60.
Thanks smiley

As long as the vendors low level format is intact on the drive, the VMS install procedure will handle initializing a filesystem on it and ask you for what labels you want on it.

If the low-level format is gone, then I am not sure that there are any tools available for mere mortals that can reformat it for a reasonable cost.

Just boot the to the CD.

Hi,
Quick and Clean:
1.) Check the Drive for Bad Blocks from console
- Set Disk to SCSI ID 3 unterminated
- >>>Show Dev
(Check that Disk ist recognized as dka300 with expected capacity
- >>> test /util SCSI 3
(Select SCSI ID 3, lun 0, OK to confirm)
Wait...Hopefully 0 badblocks

2.) Attach SCSI CD-ROM with 512 Bytes per sector Mode to SCSI ID 5
->>> boot dka500
(Type Date 17-Apr-2017 11:20)
To Transfer the Image that makes Disk useable and bootable:
$ Backup /Image dka500:vms073.b /save_set dka300:
(Wait)
Press interupt Switch
>>> Boot dka300

Continue Installation :-)

Good luck, Peter

Thank you for your replies Malmberg and Peter. Very grateful Peter I followed your clear and easy instructions and have loaded OpenVMS on VAX for the first time smiley I know now too what to do in future and can hopefully (probably help needed) get some old VAXen up to the current OpenVMS 7.3 from 5.5.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
