I am new to OpenVMS os. And I have no hardware to practice with.

So, my first silly question would be: can I install an OpenVMS operation system on my home computer which has WindowXP?

I have been developing Window's Application Software for years, using Visual C++6.0. There is a Visual C++ for OpenVMS: HP OpenVMS Enterprise Tookit. Can I program with this toolkit and then migrate it to OpenVMS system quickly? I tried to download the evaluation version of this toolkit, but failed.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Sort of. OpenVMS only runs on Itanium, Alpha and VAX hardware. To get it running under Windows you need an emulator - currently there are emulators available to mimic VAX hardware on a Windows box.

Look at the CHARON-VAX product from Software Resources International (http://www.charon-vax.com); while this is a commercial product, they also provide free evaluation versions with fixed configuration and runtime limitations (http://www.softresint.com/charon-vax/Tools_and_tips.htm#freeware).

An alternative is the SIMH emulator (http://simh.trailing-edge.com/) which is freely available.

On the other hand, you can always look at eBay - you can frequently find older Alphas at affordable prices there. Sometimes even a VAX.

Hope this helps,
Hans.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
