In order to learn VMS I'm thinking about porting the Squeak (Smalltalk) environment to VMS.
Is this permitted under the hobbyist license ? Squeak is open source, licensed under the Apache 2.0 license with a move to the MIT license in the works.

Tim, running away from UNIX and C as fast as I can smiley

The terms of the OpenVMS Hobbyist License allow you to port Open Source Apps to your hearts content. What you can't do is produce and sell a product based upon those efforts, unless you get real OpenVMS Licenses. The real key is individual, home user, and non-commercial.

As John R. Wisniewski believed - as an individual (or group of friends), you can develop anything you like, even if you plan to sell it. Just get real licenses BEFORE you offer the product to the market! HP DSPP is the program you'll want to join in order to get cheap hardware and licenses that do allow commercial development.

Once you finish the port, please let me know, and I can make it downloadable from the Hobbyist Program web site for others to benefit.

Thanks for the info. All I need to get started is the OpenVMS media disk for VAX. I've got SIMH running on my macbook pro. I've been tinkering with ES40 since only the Alpha media kit is available at the moment, but no luck so far getting it to compile yet.

I've got a good book on Squeak that describes the process of porting it to a new platform. I won't say the process will be easy, but VMS's POSIX compatibility will go a long way to making the port easier as Squeak runs on all most all flavors of UNIX.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
